Zohran Mamdani is rewriting political norms regarding support for Israel

The leader of Israel Netanyahu might be feeling uneasy regarding Zohran Mamdani's resounding success in the November 4th NYC mayoral election. This isn't just due to baseless allegations of antisemitism but instead because the new mayor has shattered an established unwritten rule regarding calling out Israel's leadership for NYC political candidates.

Challenging Established Norms

NYC has the largest Jewish community in the United States – and the second biggest urban Jewish population in the world after Tel Aviv. Traditional thinking held that many Jewish voters placed importance on defending Israel's leadership above other issues, so that questioning Israel's policies could turn away this constituency.

Mamdani thoroughly challenged this assumption. During his campaign he addressed openly and accurately about what he called atrocities in the Palestinian territory. He insisted that all residents in Israel deserve the same rights. He even stated he'd detain Netanyahu if he visited New York. Nevertheless, approximately one-third of New York's Jewish electorate supported him, plus many other constituents.

Analyzing Electoral Success

Some Jewish voters may have felt uncomfortable with Mamdani's criticism of Israel but appreciated other elements of his agenda, such as his persistent emphasis on affordability issues. Others, like this writer, were attracted by his honesty on such an crucial matter. Numerous people were probably also disturbed by the efforts of his primary rival to tarnish him with fact-free claims of antisemitism.

Since the election, the mayor has maintained his openness about Israel. In an unexpectedly cordial encounter with the president in Washington, Mamdani repeated his views regarding atrocities and noted that American taxpayers was funding such policies. The president allowed the remark pass without challenge.

Policy Consequences

After an incident in which a prominent NYC temple welcomed an organization urging Jewish Americans to move to Israel but also to settlements in the occupied West Bank, Mamdani highlighted the illegality of these settlements. This reflects Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, that forbids a military occupier from transferring its population into captured lands.

It's hard to overstate how rare such statements are from an elected NYC public official.

Political Context and Comparisons

This doesn't mean that NYC politicians never criticize Israel. In March 2024, Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish Democratic leader representing New York, delivered a much-discussed speech where he said that although Israel has a right to defend itself, it should minimize harm to Palestinian civilians. However, his wording was cautiously worded – far milder than Mamdani's – and he declined to support Mamdani even when he won the Democratic primary.

Already, Mamdani is attracting other progressive candidates to NYC House elections who are prepared to criticize Israel and confront incumbents who won't. Evidently, he has broken the barrier and launched a new trend.

National Significance

We shouldn't equate NYC with the United States overall. It remains a solidly Democratic and exceptionally progressive city. Crucially, based on longtime resident experience, a large portion of its Jewish population shares these liberal values. Within more compact Jewish populations nationwide, there's frequently a greater sense of vulnerability and consequently stronger support of Israel as a possible refuge from discrimination. In New York, Jewish life is woven into urban culture. The security that comes from living as a Jew in NYC often leads to greater receptiveness to honest criticism of the Israeli government.

International Context

The changing attitudes regarding Israel that Mamdani's victory represents should serve as a wake-up call for the Netanyahu government. Its actions in the conflict has turned Israel an international outcast in much of the world. Germany itself temporarily halted weapons exports destined for use in the territory. The UK, Canadian government, France and Australian leaders recognized Palestine's statehood. Israel faces atrocity allegations before the International Court of Justice, and the prime minister and his former military leader confront atrocity allegations at the global tribunal for depriving and depriving Palestinian civilians. Israel today is overwhelmingly reliant on the defense funding, weapon deals, and political backing of one country: America.

Changing American Politics

This signifies Donald Trump wields considerable power. He monitors public opinion. He undoubtedly notices that established Israeli advocacy organizations are unable to rally Jewish votes as successfully as previously. He certainly sees that including his Christian evangelical supporters – traditionally the strongest consistent Israel backers constituency – are having second thoughts following recent events in the conflict.

Israel's declining support across America seems to be a reason why the president decided free to impose his Middle East proposal on Netanyahu despite its failure to meet all his initial requirements. The declining backing of Israel will certainly influence future decisions when the president weighs whether to insist on a clear pathway to a Palestinian state, as Arab leaders have requested. The president will require their cooperation to finance Gaza's reconstruction and to supply a global peacekeeping mission for the territory.

Conclusion: A New Political Reality

That support for Israel is no longer mandatory in New York politics might ultimately signify that it isn't necessary for Washington either. This means positive development for Palestinian justice yet negative consequences for the aspirations of Israeli leadership and his far-right allies that the US will continue ignoring Israel's policies as it tries to settle the Palestinian conflict through genocide, forced deportation, or ongoing apartheid.
