When Swimmers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Image Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, detected cracking sounds reverberating around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her apartment, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the slope soaked, she noticed someone coming up from behind. It was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and unshod … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, police and ambulance crews treating dozens of victims.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the beach facility next to the site of the violence serving as a impromptu hospital. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including going into the surf to save people needing help.

In the days after the attack, statements of gratitude flooded in. One post conveyed gratitude for the lifeguards who exhibited that “kindness will always overcome evil”.

The group of lifeguards issued a message, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care shown towards our team,” the group commented. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the second the incident began until late that night.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a local official.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for the public, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much good we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
