Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
