The UK government has pulled a disputed $1.15 billion loan for a giant liquefied natural gas project in the African nation of Mozambique, following growing accusations that the initiative contributes to the climate emergency and militant unrest in the area.

Government Decision and Rationale

Business Secretary the Business Secretary stated that the UK would withdraw its financial support for the Mozambique LNG venture, marking five years after the deal sparked bitter criticism from advocacy groups over its impact on human rights, security, and the planet.

“While these choices are never easy, the administration holds the view that UK financing of this project will not further the needs of our nation,” remarked the minister.

The move came to light as the project's lead company, French energy major TotalEnergies, plans to resume the delayed operation, which has been on hold since a violent militant attack on a local community in 2021 led to hundreds of fatalities.

History and Growing Risks

The support package was initially approved in 2020. Officials said they had evaluated the dangers linked to the venture and determined they had increased significantly since that point.

Originally, the UK's finance body had said the scheme would support thousands of UK jobs and could be “transformational for Mozambique's economic and social progress.”

However, environmental groups have maintained that the African country should be encouraged to invest more aggressively in clean power to establish a lasting green economy.

Opposition and Calls for Wider Withdrawal

The project served as a source for terror in the region and was also accused of infringing upon the human rights of local communities who were relocated when development work began.

“It has been obvious for years that this scheme is a failure for local communities and for the environment,” stated one activist from a sustainable finance organisation. He urged leading international banks funding the project to end their support, saying they “can no longer overlook the concerns.”

Another leading climate advocate remarked: “This Mozambique gas project is a massive source of emissions, linked to serious human rights abuses. It should never have been given UK public backing in the first place.”

The campaigner further advocated that the UK should instead support countries like Mozambique by helping them to adapt to the impacts of the climate change and put money in their rich clean energy resources.
