Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Isla Mujeres, Mexico on 20 March.

A comprehensive search and rescue effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.

Military Search and Rescue Operations Deployed

Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine total sailors, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island endures repeated power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy said.

The nine-person crew are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"The group is working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Recent Aid Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the country.

That boat, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Diplomatic measures have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from different leaders highlighting the delicate nature of bilateral relations.

In response to previous proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to discover the boats and ensure the well-being of the people on board.

At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
