This Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective On Resellers

To celebrate the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership has been formed. The Pokémon Company alongside the Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring exclusive merchandise. Fans will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled from the physical location and its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology Behind the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited tome filled with stunning artwork depicting creatures in their natural habitats. The concept is the kind of research an in-world scientist might publish after adventurers provide field notes, or a naturalist's journal could have sketched if the famous islands teemed with Pidgeys instead of finches. Part of the charm lies in the book's scholarly treatment, presenting Pokémon as worthy of scientific study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Promo Card Different

The company regularly to issue to release promos for big events or brand collaborations. Many of these promotional cards often feature the famous electric rodent that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this latest promotion apart is its distinctly bigger size. While precise specs were not immediately shared, its distribution will certainly be strictly limited, with fans able to get just one card per purchase.

Curbing Reseller Interest

According to an official announcement, a portion of the pop-up items will also be sold outside the museum walls. However, broader availability is slated for specific stores within the United Kingdom. Critically, fans cannot purchase this promo through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is a given, it appears they're going to have trouble stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're unable to attend, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny from purchases from the Museum shop and its online store, including Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. That encompasses the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry to discover answers to the planetary emergency," it notes.
