The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
