Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.

"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Theories and Excitement Run High

While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.

Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
