Overtake Mode & Active Aero - Explaining F1's Updated Regulatory Language

The 2026 Formula 1 cars are set to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

F1 has revealed the simplified language that will be used to explain the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The championship is embarking on what is arguably the most significant rules overhaul in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, driving key advancements in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, competitors will tactically deploy battery power – potentially on hot laps – to achieve the best result.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which phrases would improve understanding of the main elements of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to make a set of intricate features of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for specific components – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in favour of straightforward terms that clearly indicate the primary purpose of the technology.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that competitors will have more power to make decisions regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes mandate a series of modes that will be shown on television graphics to improve the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Passing Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a competitor is within one second the leading car to execute an overtaking maneuver.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the ERS that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It provides the driver maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these key functions will have to be used with calculation, as the overall battery capacity is capped.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and increased velocity, and angling down in the turns for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: Cars can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only reduced throttle is used.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a wheelbase reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Overall downforce is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will inevitably claw this back as they refine their designs.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The vehicles will employ moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to improve speed and increase straightline speed and return into place for maximum cornering performance.

Tyres will continue to use the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

2026 Engine Regulations

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in energy output by the ICE and the electrical system, a rise from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The energy recovery system is made less complex through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly component that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from biomass or synthetic industrial processes.
