This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland. "An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster. Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be low, meaning warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters. To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster. Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England. Travel is anticipated to be disrupted. People have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road. Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network. Readings Expected to Drop Even More As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country. About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills. Health Warnings Issued Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C. The health agency said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups. The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely essential.
