As he approaches his sixth anniversary as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to achieving success.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

Arteta took over on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that initial silverware stands as his lone significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Yes,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And numerous factors must occur in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal played just after his role was made public.

The Current Landscape

Given that second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.

The manager is under a contract with a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver promptly.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, highlighting the constant necessity to validate his position. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and give the maximum to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal faces the upcoming game dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is anticipated to keep him out for several weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
