Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
